Rules of engagement 1. The Asian Rich List is our assessment of the wealth of Britain’s 101 richest Asians. Most valuations are based on the com- bined wealth of the family and the share- holding in family businesses, which have been pooled together for the family unit. 2. Our list includes people who originate from the Indian subcontinent. They must either be British citizens or live mainly in the United Kingdom. 3. The actual size of the family’s wealth may vary from our figure. Many families have a complex ownership structure, with some wealth hidden in off-shore trusts, so their true values are difficult to assess. 4. Wealth which is based on shares held in quoted companies has been assessed ac- cording to their market value in March 2013. 5. Private companies have been valued ac- cording to their EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisa- tion) profits and a discounted multiple or on a net asset basis, depending on which sector they trade in. We have taken into account corporate debt and other assets in the company. Where possible, we have looked at consolidated accounts. To make this assessment, we have accessed infor- mation held at Companies House. 6. We have made an assessment of private wealth based on research carried out by the Asian Rich List team. We measure identifiable wealth such as land and property. We have no access to bank ac- counts and therefore have excluded this from our valuation. 7. Some individuals on the list have derived their wealth from the sale of their busi- nesses. In making our valuation, we have taken into account their tax status and the relevant tax rates. 8.
